For Isabel, 3/14/17

The whole day is wide open

And I have it with you

The sky is cloudy and the wind is cold

But we have this fire to watch together

It keeps us both warm while

We sit in silence

Every once in a while you ask a question

Why is Ella running?

Why does the fire make that sound?

Who taught you to count?

Why is our garden green?

I answer as best I can

When you’re satisfied, we listen to the fire crack

You eat uncooked marshmallows off a stick

As I watch you, I think how much you look like your mom

I could sit and think all day

About

how lucky I am

what job you’ll have

what music you’ll love

if you’ll want to go camping with me

There’s a lot to think about

But it’s okay

The whole day is wide open

And we have a lot of wood to burn
